The Difference Between EMDR Therapy & EMDR Intensive Therapy

EMDR Therapy is a simple but effective and efficient therapy using bilateral stimulation (BLS) ─ tapping, auditory tones, or eye movements ─ to accelerate the brain’s capacity to process and heal a troubling memory. The self-limiting beliefs and disturbing emotions can be processed to an adaptive resolution. EMDR intensive therapy is designed to accelerate the healing process by providing focused EMDR Therapy sessions over the course of 1-5 days or weeks. A full-day EMDR therapy intensive includes a total of 6 hours of therapy with breaks and/or lunchtime built into the day.

How EMDR Intensive Therapy in North Carolina, South Carolina, or Florida Can Help

  1. You may feel better in a shorter amount of time. A full day of EMDR intensive therapy may be worth more than two months of weekly therapy.
  2. You may have less time living with trauma symptoms. Therefore, you can stop those symptoms from continuing to take a toll on your work, relationships, parenting, and/or general quality of life.
  3. We have a better chance of having enough time and actually resolving issues when they are brought up along with the emotions and negative beliefs.
  4. You can focus on healing with less interruption from life crises.
  5. We can spend more time doing the work by reducing the time spent on check-ins and closures.
  6. Overall, it is more cost-effective, thanks to the effectiveness and efficiency of EMDR and less overall treatment time.
  7. You can get quality EMDR treatment even if you live far away or have a busy life and cannot commit to weekly sessions.

EMDR Intensive Therapy Sessions

Currently, all screenings and treatments are conducted via telehealth or online video sessions. For the EMDR intensive therapy, you will need to be physically located in NC, SC or FL at the time of the appointment.

Pre-treatment screening: We will discuss your situation, needs, and goals to determine if you would be a good candidate for an EMDR intensive, assess the number of treatment days needed, and answer any questions you may have.

EMDR Intensive: Full-day intensive sessions will begin at 9 am, and end at around 4 pm. This will include an hour for lunch as well as other breaks when needed.

Post-treatment follow-up: We will plan a follow-up check-in, which may (or may not) lead to additional check-ins, additional treatment, or referral.

Common questions about EMDR Intensive Therapy

What is EMDR Intensive Therapy?

EMDR Intensive Therapy is an accelerated and focused form of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. It involves concentrated sessions over a shorter period, aiming to address and resolve trauma or distressing experiences.

How does EMDR Intensive Therapy differ from traditional EMDR?

While traditional EMDR sessions are spread out over several weeks, EMDR Intensive Therapy condenses these sessions into a shorter timeframe, often completed in consecutive days. This intensive approach allows for quicker processing and resolution of traumatic memories.

Who can benefit from EMDR Intensive Therapy?

EMDR Intensive Therapy is suitable for individuals experiencing various forms of trauma, including PTSD, anxiety, and other psychological distress. It can be particularly beneficial for those seeking rapid relief and resolution.

How long does an EMDR Intensive Therapy session typically last?

Sessions can vary in length, but they are often longer than traditional EMDR sessions. Each session may last several hours, with breaks provided to ensure the individual’s comfort and well-being.

Is EMDR Intensive Therapy suitable for everyone?

EMDR Intensive Therapy may not be suitable for everyone. A thorough assessment by a qualified EMDR therapist is crucial to determine if this approach is appropriate for an individual’s specific needs and circumstances.

What happens during an EMDR Intensive Therapy session?

During a session, the individual works with the therapist to process traumatic memories. This involves guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or taps, while focusing on specific aspects of the distressing experience. The goal is to reprocess the memory and alleviate associated distress.

Are the effects of EMDR Intensive Therapy long-lasting?

EMDR Intensive Therapy aims to produce lasting results. Research suggests that the positive effects are maintained over time, and individuals often report significant improvements in their overall well-being.

Are there any potential side effects of EMDR Intensive Therapy?

While EMDR Intensive Therapy is generally considered safe, some individuals may experience temporary distress as they process traumatic memories. It’s important to work closely with a qualified EMDR therapist who can provide support and guidance throughout the process.

How can I find a qualified EMDR therapist for Intensive Therapy?

To find a qualified EMDR therapist, you can start by contacting mental health professionals in your area, checking online directories, seeking recommendations from healthcare providers, or you can visit EMDRIA website which lists certified EMDR therapists.

Is EMDR Intensive Therapy covered by insurance?

Insurance companies usually don’t cover EMDR intensives. The initial screening assessment might be covered depending on the specific insurance plan and whether the therapist is in-network or out-of-network.
